The mushroom is an ingredient for some cooking recipes and cannot be eaten by itself. To obtain, right click on a Forest Soil and select Nature's Lore, then Gather Mushrooms (Required skill level: 0). The harvesting of mushrooms can will degrade the quality of the tile, reducing the quality of each mushroom found, too.
