A [[tree]] may provide logs and renewable resources such as [[bark]], [[branch]]es, [[:category:sprouts|sprouts]], [[apple]]s, [[nuts]] and [[silkworm cocoons]]. Logs can be cut into [[Building log|building logs]], [[:Category:Boards|boards]] and [[:Category:Billets|billets]].

[[Tree]]s can be inspected by right-clicking on it and choosing <code>Inspect</code> to reveal the quality of the [[tree]], and the amount and type of resources that can be harvested from it. The quality of the resource will be the same as the quality of the tree, but is limited by its associated skill. Trees of different growth stages and qualities have own models.

[[Gathering]] is used to collect [[bark]], [[branch]]es, [[Apple|apples]], [[nuts]] and [[Silkworm cocoon|silkworm cocoons]]. Apples, nuts and silkworm cocoons can only be gathered during their [[Calendar|gathering days]]. The quality of the gathered materials is limited by your effective [[Gathering]] skill, higher skill also lets you gather more apples, nuts or silkworm cocoons per action.

[[Forestry]] is used to collect [[:category:sprouts|sprouts]] during their [[Calendar|seeding days]]. The quality of the spout is limited by your effective [[forestry]] skill, though luck has a chance of giving you a higher quality sprout.

You can chop down a tree with a [[Primitive axe]] or [[Hatchet]] or [[Believer's Hatchet]] into a [[softwood log|softwood]], [[hardwood log|hardwood]], [[Whitewood log|whitewood]] or [[amberwood log]]. Chopping down a tree uses the [[Forestry]] skill but does not limit the quality of the resulting log which is always the same quality as the tree regardless of skill. A higher skill speeds up the actions and lowers the needed amount of repetitions.

To plant a [[:category:sprouts|sprout]] you need [[Forestry]], [[forest soil]], a [[shovel]] and the correct [[Calendar|seeding day]]. The quality of the planted tree is limited to your effective [[Forestry]] skill level or the quality of the used sprout, whatever is lower.

The amount of resources a [[tree]] contains, depends on the quality, the growth state and the type of the tree. "Minor" trees don't contain anything. "Medium" trees contain approximately half the resources of the fully grown "mature" trees. Trees will grow over time. Logs from higher quality trees will provide more billets, boards and building logs than lower quality trees (<code>Inspect</code> a log to check the amount of wood). 

The following table shows the amount of [[bark]], [[Branch|branches]] and [[sprouts]] one can get from a "mature", fully grown tree while a medium tree will have approximately half these amounts.   

The log column in the table shows the expected amount of wood in a log one will harvest from that type and quality of a mature tree (half for medium trees and no logs from minor trees). Cutting up a log into lumber uses up some of the wood of a log, with [[Building log|building logs]] using 100, boards 20 and billets 10.

===Growth===
Each tree type has its own season when it can be planted. You can check the seeding seasons in the calendar with K by default.
Once planted, each young tree has a chance of about 30% to die during the very first growth tick and will die when it reaches its maximum age. There will be no stump left if the tree dies.
Trees only grow during dedicated day types. These weathers are taken into account:

*Cloudy
*Shower
*Snowy

There is a difference between wild-grow and players’ planted trees. The ones you cultivated are grown faster, so you’ll be able to gather resource quicker. However, cultivated one also has a higher chance to die at the first growing state, than a wild one.

*The trees which yield the largest amounts of wood are [[Oak tree|Oaks]] for hardwood and [[Aspen tree|Aspen]] for softwood.
*Pine trees and Maple trees can only be planted in their respective [[Region|regions]].
*Harvest sprouts and replant trees you chop down. Massive building projects can quickly deforest an area, resulting in problems for future [[construction]] and [[Crafting skills|crafting]].

**Having a log with a high amount of wood, you might find it faster to just pick up the log and carry it to where you need the lumber rather than cutting it up where you cut down the tree making multiple trips to move the cut lumber. For a log with a low amount of wood it might be faster to just cut it up where it fell and stow it in a [[Horse cart|horse cart]] or [[Trader cart|trader cart]] nearby,  or simply carry the cut lumber especially if you have a [[horse]] to ride.
*The tree logs can be loaded onto a [[horse cart]] and will take up 2 of the available 12 slots in the cart, regardless of the type of log or the amount of wood. This is in addition to the horse cart's normal inventory, so you could fill the cart with cut building logs, boards, and/or billets, and still load 6 uncut logs in the cart.
*If you collect some of the [[Forest_Soil|forest soil]] with [[terraforming]] you can place some of it somewhere else and then plant a sprout there. This way you can create your own grove of trees wherever you like. Plant a stand of pines and oaks for lumber, or some apple trees for food, or [[Mulberry tree|mulberry trees]] for [[Silkworm cocoon|silk]]. Or just plant a few trees to landscape your village!
